{"id":670,"date":"2018-02-27T21:07:54","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T21:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/?p=670"},"modified":"2018-09-20T21:08:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T21:08:40","slug":"anchoring-etiquette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/anchoring-etiquette\/","title":{"rendered":"Anchoring Etiquette"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"vertical\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/anchoring-etiquette\/\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>Boaters usual<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Anchoring.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Anchoring-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Anchoring\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Anchoring-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Anchoring-190x143.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.forespar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Anchoring.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a>ly know that anchoring in the channel or the fairway is not only a bad idea, but illegal. and unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, it&#8217;s not that simple.\u00a0 <strong>How&#8217;s your anchoring etiquette?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The First Boat In Sets The Rule<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You motor around the point into your favorite cove, and you see another boat already anchored, swinging off a single hook.\u00a0 Etiquette dictates that you do the same, dropping your single hook on a spot that will keep you clear of the other boat when wind and tide change.\u00a0 If it&#8217;s relatively shallow, some of us\u00a0 even buoy the anchor, so others will know where it is (a spare fender and a few feet of paracord will usually do).<\/p>\n<p>Then, how do you compute the swing radius &#8211; yours and the other boat&#8217;s?\u00a0 You can always do the math of a right triangle using water depth and scope to get the unknown &#8211; the distance from the boat to the anchor,\u00a0 But, assumptions of a 7:1 scope aside, that swing radius is going to change.\u00a0 Tides rise and fall, wind and currents change, and different boats react differently to those changes.<\/p>\n<p>Keel sailboats react faster to current shifts, and later to wind, while power cruisers, especially those with two or three deck levels, react to wind faster than current.\u00a0 To make it even more fun, boats using all-chain rodes usually lay to scope of 3:1, as opposed to the 7:1 typical of boats with a rope rode.\u00a0 And funner yet, the other skipper may have more rode out than you thought, and you&#8217;ve swung to lie right above his hook, of course just when he\/she is trying to leave &#8211; no big deal, unless you&#8217;re not on your boat and didn&#8217;t leave an anchor watch.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You Set the Rule<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You come around the point to the &#8220;hot spot&#8221; on a summer Saturday and you&#8217;re the first to arrive.\u00a0 When that happens, the basic rule is to set two anchors &#8211; bow and stern &#8211; which allows more boats to enjoy the day.\u00a0 After you&#8217;ve set the two hooks, you can call &#8220;first in&#8221;, and there&#8217;ll be the usual shouting when the fleet arrives, but you&#8217;ll be there, and in good shape.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Don&#8217;t Be In A Hurry to Get Off<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As tempting as it may be, don&#8217;t jump into the dinghy with your picnic or clamming basket in hand.\u00a0 Take the time to be sure you&#8217;re not dragging the hook.\u00a0 Take a couple of &#8220;ranges&#8221;, by lining up two stationary object ashore &#8211; in two or more directions &#8211; a couple of trees, rocks, etc.\u00a0 Wait a while, and if they stay in line, you are secure.\u00a0 Then go where you must go.\u00a0 Leaving crew on &#8220;anchor watch&#8221; to deal with emergencies is a good plan if you&#8217;re going to out of sight of the boat.<\/p>\n<p>Now you&#8217;re a good anchor neighbor.\u00a0 Etiquette means good manners, and good manners make friends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tweet Boaters usually know that anchoring in the channel or the fairway is not only a bad idea, but illegal. and unsafe.
